Athlete of the Month

Author(s): Brooke Hathaway

Junior Emily Chapman is a varsity track and cross country athlete. She has been running track since sixth grade, but she says her best decision was joining cross country freshman year.

Chapman’s favorite part of the sports she is involved in is the community. “The amount of support and encouragement from the coaches helps push me and others to be better,” says Chapman. During winter and spring track, Emily sprints the 400m, 200m, and relays 4x4 and 4x1. “Track is just such a rewarding sport that is for any skill level, and you get to make such fun memories,” says Chapman.

In the future, Chapman plans on attending a university, and maybe running track or cross country in college. She knows it will always be a part of her life, no matter what level. Her goals for next season are to sub one minute in the 400m and to become a captain for track.

Chapman’s advice for younger runners is “to not be afraid of the athletic trainer, [be]cause shin splints aren't going to just disappear, and don't be scared to take a break to feel better.” As easy it is to push yourself through an injury; Chapman states that breaks are essential to be a good athlete.

Throughout Chapman’s sports career, she has worked hard to improve, and grow as an athlete and person. She will continue to as she finishes high school next year, and into college. Emily Chapman is dedicated, kind, and an amazing teammate on and off the track, and we wish her the best of luck in her future and meeting her goals!
