Barnard’s Orchard Carries on a Family Legacy
By Emma Cena
Barnard’s Orchard, located in Kennett Square, is more than just a family-owned farm. For around 300 years, the Barnard family has worked to provide the community with fresh produce. The owner today is Lewis Barnard, and he is the 8th generation to the farm. He is also a Unionville high school alumnus, giving him a personal connection to the local community.
The orchard covers around 74 acres, with about 18 acres dedicated to apple orchards. Throughout the year, the farm grows many different fruits, vegetables, and flowers. The produce options include apples, peaches, pumpkins, sweet corn, tomatoes, and pansies. The variety allows the orchard to offer something for residents throughout every season.
One of the most popular reasons families visit Barnard’s Orchard is to pick their own produce. Specifically, the orchard offers pumpkin and apple picking, a fun activity for all ages.
Lewis Barnard is known to be a friendly face who helps customers at the orchard. Senior Liliana Cena goes to the orchard each year. She explained, “everyone at the orchard is always super nice and very helpful.” His connection to the farm roots the orchard in the community. Through Barnard's work, he continues a family tradition while helping keep farming an important part of the area.
Barnard’s Orchard gives local residents the opportunity to enjoy locally grown and fresh produce, as well as the ability to spend quality time with family and friends. Supporting the orchard means supporting a family tradition that has been a part of the community for generations.
