Kennett Square Hosts Its Annual Mushroom Festival
By Helena Gomes
As fall season begins, mushroom season in the mushroom capital begins as well. Every year, many gather in Kennett Square to celebrate the town’s annual Mushroom Festival. This festival gives people an opportunity to enjoy delicious food, entertainment, contests, and shopping all in one day with their family and friends.
The mission for the festival is not only to educate people about mushrooms, but also to promote and financially support local vendors who wish to share their art, crafts, and hand made goods with the public. This event also gives back to the community, as it supports local organizations in Southern Chester County.
One of the biggest attractions in this festival is the food. Vendors sell a multitude of different foods, ranging from a variety of mushroom dishes to many other options like barbeque and perogies. The diverse food options allow attendees to try something new throughout the weekend.
One vendor, Denise Costa, set up her exhibit for the first time this year. Displaying her photographs, paintings, and designed tote bags, Costa was able to sell an abundance of her products.
“Coming into the festival I wasn’t expecting a big turn-out, but I was pleasantly surprised. I’m very happy and grateful for all the sales I made and the people I met.”
This festival has become a very important tradition to Kennett Square. What first started as a small community event turned into a large celebration which brings visitors into town to celebrate both mushrooms and small businesses, which are both important parts to the identity of Kennett Square.
