The high school boysâ basketball program has once again been a force in the Ches-Mont League, showing off a mix of discipline, teamwork, and grit. Under head coach Chris Cowles, the team focused on preparation and conditioning all season, making sure they were ready for whatever came their way.
This year, much of the teamâs success came from the backcourt. Senior Tommy McGinnis and sophomores Harris Stanislawczyk and Owen Watson led the way as guards. McGinnis and Watson were reliable scoring options, hitting big three pointers that opened up the offense, while Stanislawczyk brought energy and defensive pressure, often taking on the toughest assignments on the floor.
Down low, sophomore Graham Huntington and senior Will Sharkey gave the Longhorns a physical presence in the paint. Their rebounding and defense kept Unionville in games and allowed the guards to run freely on offense. Huntington credited the seniors: âThe seniors made a big difference for us,â he said. âThey set the tone in practice and games, and that helped everyone stay focused and prepared.â
The teamâs depth also mattered. Seniors Brendon Heyer and Sean Haug's effort, hustle, and leadership made a difference night after night. As Stanislawczyk put it, âThe team was well rounded,â a perfect reflection of how everyone contributed to the seasonâs success. Now that the season is over, the focus turns to the future. With sophomores and juniors gaining valuable experience this year, the team has a strong foundation to build on, and the Longhornsâ mix of talent and teamwork suggests that the best is still ahead.
