On February 7 at the Drexel Recreational Center, the high school’s rowing team kicked off the season with a string of victories at the Center City Slam. The team’s performance offered an exciting glimpse into the season ahead, placing Unionville firmly on other teams’ radar this spring. Both novices and long-time rowing veterans performed strongly, with the team achieving multiple top 20 finishes and setting personal records.

Firstly, with strong novice results, the future looks promising for the crew team, even beyond this season. Center City Slam served as a jumping off-point for many boys and girls novice rowers competing there for the first time. Freshman Molly Cromer won gold in the girls’ novice division after a very tough matchup. She said, “My experience was unforgettable because it was my first time competing at City Slam, and winning first place in the novice girls category made all the hard training feel worth it.”

Additionally, Cromer said, “The energy at the event was intense and exciting, with the Drexel Rec. Center packed with teams, loud cheering, and constant competition that pushed everyone to race their hardest.” This competitive atmosphere was reflected in the rest of the team’s results. Alongside Cromer, junior Tyler Smith walked away with a medal after competing and winning bronze in the boys’ lightweight division. One of the team captains, junior Adeline Cristian, even set a personal record, showing that the team pushed themselves to their limits this weekend. And, not only did Adeline push herself this weekend, but varsity junior rower Tiffany Truong jumped in the 500 meter sprint, despite normally competing as a coxswain, and came home with a bronze medal.

All in all, Unionville’s performance at the Center City Slam was an incredible start to the season, and the team showed determination, talent, and a competitive spirit that will carry them into the spring.
