Coach of the Season: Coach James O’Rourke
By Aadi Bellur
This fall, the boys’ golf team had great success and went all the way to districts in an exciting and compelling season. This is largely due to their outstanding coach, Mr. James O’Rourke. O’Rourke’s immense success earned him the honor of Coach of the Season.
Having spent over thirty years teaching at Patton Middle School and coaching four sports (golf, tennis, wrestling, and track), O’Rourke emphasizes that strong teamwork, belief, and putting the team before yourself can lead to success. He works hard to build a positive culture where players support each other on and off the golf course. O’Rourke explains that even though golf and tennis are individual sports, “teaching [his] players how to play as a team” is the most important part of coaching. He encourages his players to support one another and celebrate each other’s successes.
Furthermore, O’Rourke values the relationships he builds with his players as much as he values the wins and losses, but it is about connection and team bonding. He said that “[he] loves getting to know his players” and that “the bonds [they] make as a team are bigger than just a relationship that will last for a few years.” O’Rourke often keeps in touch with his players after they graduate, showing how much he truly cares about his players.
Another key part of O’Rourke’s coaching approach is focusing on the mental side of sports. Teaching his players to be mentally tough is one of Coach O’Rourke’s favorite parts of coaching. He describes that everyone can see that his players are physically gifted but what no one sees is how mentally strong they are. He emphasizes that mental strength is what is needed to perform at a high level and being mentally strong can carry over to the rest of their lives. This combination of skill, teamwork, and mental strength helped guide the golf team to go to districts this year. Mr. O’Rourke’s dedication, leadership, and ability to create a positive environment for his players display why the Golf Team had such a successful season. The respect his players have for him makes it easy to see why he was chosen as Coach of the Season.
