DECA Hosts Candy Gram Fundraiser

Candy grams are a common fundraising method at the high school, particularly for student organizations such as the DECA club. Sold around holidays like Valentine’s Day, candy grams typically include a note and a small treat and are delivered to students during the school day.

“[Candy grams] are an effective funding activity,” said junior Paridhi Jain. The DECA club used candy grams this month to raise money for future competitions. “Next year we’re going to be competing, which requires a lot of funds from members…. So we want to offset the cost and make it easier to compete,” said Jain. Funding from candy grams can be used to cover operational costs, equipment, travel, and events.

Holiday-themed fundraisers tend to attract more student participation, especially when paired with advertising. The DECA club used the high school’s morning announcements and their own Instagram page to promote their candy gram sale to students. Candy grams, which first began in the 1920s as heartfelt notes sent by Morse code, continue to boost morale during the long winter months of the school year. However, they also present challenges. Food allergies, dietary restrictions, and affordability can limit participation for some students. Schools and clubs often address these concerns by offering allergy-safe or non-candy options and allowing anonymous delivery to reduce social pressure.

Overall, the DECA club’s candy gram fundraiser supports both student engagement and the resources needed for the club’s future success.
