Hacky Sack Comeback: Will it Stay or Will it Go?
By Beckett Lim
A footbag that can be filled with sand or plastic pellets has taken the high school by storm. Hacky Sack, also known as “sack,” is a game that involves passing around “the sack" using only your legs. This catchy game was extremely popular back in the 70s and 90s and the throwback has quickly become a massive comeback. Throughout a typical school day, the chances that you won’t see a group of people passing around “the sack” are slim to none. Students want to play sack everywhere. It’s all over the Cyber Cafe, the courtyard, the turf, the gym lobby–sack is everywhere. The game is so admired among students that officials of high school institutions have had to take charge and clarify the rules regarding its restricted outside use only. Despite these restrictions, the urge to play Hacky Sack is still high and irreplaceable.
New “tech” is introduced to the game daily. If you’re a rookie here, “tech” are moves that still keep the sack up in the air in unique ways. For example, “the scorpion” has been a popular move lately. It’s when the sack goes over your head and you kick your legs behind you to keep the sack in the air and keep the flow of the game stable. Instagram has also played a vital role in the game’s growth. There are player rankings across schools that are released weekly and many places have Hacky Sack accounts on social media where they post their most sick rallies.
While Hacky Sack seems like a silly trend that will be gone in a flash, its blast from the past has returned and shows no sign of slowing down due to its ease and convenient use.
