Honoring Winners of the Annual Countywide Art Show

By Lucy Smith

Multiple students from the high school’s Art Department competed and placed in the Annual Countywide Art Show. Congratulations to the following artists: senior Hayden Wenturine with a second place finish in painting with his piece, Guitar; sophomore Nina Messa for receiving an honorable mention for her painting, Green Dog; junior Emily Chapman for gaining second place in Mixed Media through her sculpture, Childhood Memories; sophomore Yuna Onishi for obtaining an honorable mention for her sculpture titled Orchid.

Wenturine shared his thoughts about the competition and his piece. He explained that “Guitar” was inspired by his passion for music. When asked about the process, he described taking his own reference photo, sketching the picture, and using acrylic paints. He said he worked on the painting "over a month or two…in [art] class.”

When he found out he had placed, he said, “I was surprised…it was unexpected.” This year was his first with a formal art class, making the award even more meaningful. After graduation, Hayden plans to major in film with a minor in business at Syracuse University.

Congratulations again to the talented artists of the high school’s Art Department.
