Jewish Student Union launches at UHS

Our high school is full of opportunities to join new clubs and discover what excites you, but sometimes finding the right place to belong can feel overwhelming. That’s why student-led clubs are so important, as they create spaces where students can connect over shared interests and identities. One of the newest additions to the high school’s club list is the Jewish Student Union (JSU), founded in May 2024 by juniors Sydney Ufberg and Clara Pollak.

When asked why they started the club, the leaders felt that there was no safe space for Jewish students at Unionville. They explained that now more than ever they feel it is crucial for Jewish students to have a place where they feel safe and understood. Beyond being a safe space, JSU is also a place for education and connection for Jewish and non-Jewish students alike.

Ufberg said, “We wanted to create JSU to provide education to those who want to learn more about Jewish heritage, culture, traditions, and even just hang out with friends.”

JSU meetings will be structured to vary each time, ensuring that there is always something new to look forward to. Clara explained that a typical meeting can include fun activities, movie days, fundraisers, guest speakers, and information sessions. Whether students come to learn about Jewish holidays, try traditional foods, or meet new people, it is clear that the club offers something for everyone.

The central focus of JSU is to broaden the education and recognition of Judaism and to help combat antisemitism by spreading awareness. Sydney and Clara have worked hard to make sure that JSU feels welcoming to everyone at UHS. They insist that JSU is open to all students, and participation from non-Jewish students is encouraged. Although the club is new, Pollak and Ufberg are excited for what is ahead. They have plans for events such as a Jewish dessert bake sale and additional activities throughout the school year. More importantly, they hope JSU will make a lasting difference at UHS. They explained that they see it staying strong even after they graduate and believe future students will share the same passion for the club.

Students who are interested in joining JSU can sign up easily through social media or by contacting Sydney or Clara through their school email accounts. For anyone looking for a tight-knit community, a safe place to discuss important issues about religion, or a chance to learn about Jewish culture, the Jewish Student Union is a great place to start.
