LINK Hosts 5K and 1-Mile Walk
By Alicia Chou
On Saturday, May 9, the Leaders Involved in Networking Kids (LINK) program will be hosting a 5K and a one-mile walk. The event will serve as both a celebration and a fundraiser for LINK. With food, activities, and entertainment, the event will have something for everyone.
The LINK program has existed at the high school for over 30 years. Founded in 1995, the organization aims to break down social barriers and provide students with the "links" they need to form a strong support system. Twice a year, in the fall and in the spring, a group of students and teachers is selected to participate in a weekend retreat. “It was unlike anything I’ve experienced before. I made so many new friends and connected with people I never would have talked to otherwise,” said junior Methuki Fonseka, who attended the trip last spring.
The upcoming 5K and 1-mile walk were organized by seniors Courtney Carlson and Justine Smith. The 5K run is a timed, professional course for those with a more serious running background. The one-mile walk, on the other hand, is a relaxed, family-friendly stroll. The event was designed to include everybody, regardless of athletic ability. After the race is over, there will be refreshments, music, and the chance to meet the student leaders who make LINK possible.
