Junior Madison McCoy, the high school Volleyball team’s setter, played for the USA Deaf Volleyball 16U team this summer. She flew out to Texas for the camp, and used sign language to communicate with her teammates. McCoy can still hear, and wears hearing aids behind her ears while playing. Though she knew some sign language before camp, the experience was entirely new for her. Her joys at the camp mainly came from bonding and playing with her teammates on the court and off. The team flew together to Arizona for the tournament and performed well.
McCoy explains that her experience on the high school team allowed her to compete and perform well at the camp. She explains, “It was easy to transition to the new environment because the high school Volleyball team is a healthy and positive community.” The high school is coming off a strong season, going 21-2, ranked fourth in the state, and making it to district finals and state semifinals. As the season ends, we wish Maddie good luck in her future volleyball plans.
