MDW Down the Shore: Where Summer Begins
By Lexa Sypherd
When it comes to Memorial Day Weekend, I. Don’t. Play. Memorial Day weekend is my Super Bowl, and everyone knows it. People come from all over the world just to experience MDW DTS (down the shore) because of all the fun you are guaranteed to have. Who wants to go to gross California or Florida when I can give you cute lifeguards, gnarly big waves, unbeatable ice cream, and fantastic surf shops? We all know that the East coast does it like none other, especially me, the Jersey shore. Not to name any names, but Delaware beaches don’t quite live up to the vibes in Avalon, Ocean City, Stone Harbor, or Sea Isle. But hey, we can’t all be winners. Simply put, if you want a great time, you know where to find me. Just take that “Jersey slide,” (IYKYK) and you’ll arrive in utopia. Fellow East Coasters know what’s up. Although Memorial Day Weekend is widely celebrated by people across the country, the true meaning is oftentimes forgotten. This long weekend allows us to remember all who we have lost serving the United States. As Americans, we can embrace our patriotism and celebrate this lovely day, down at the shore.
I get so lonely during the off season with just the lame grandmas that live down here. I don’t get much action in the months November through April, so when the obnoxious teenagers start trickling in, I actually get excited. I hate to say it, but it’s true (unfortunately). I believe that all of those terrible and dreadful months are worth it for the infamous Memorial Day Weekend. It is the best weekend of the year, so it’s only fair that I spend five to six months preparing for it. Down here, Memorial Day Weekend is simply the initiation into summer. It’s what gets everyone excited for the bright days ahead. I mean, by MDW, school is nearing the end, summer is almost here, and the sun is shining bright (although this year is looking quite the opposite). Things down here become ten times more lively and exciting with the many people riding their bikes, grabbing ice cream, or going for walks.
Everyone enjoys every second of their beach time whether that’s playing spikeball, tanning, swimming in the ocean, or going for walks. And, we certainly can’t forget about the billions of photoshoots that occur throughout MDW. Obviously since you are at the greatest place on earth, it needs to be documented. We can’t forget about the Insta, duh. Anyways, I know I’ve been talking for some time, but I just wanted you all to know the fun you could have down the shore. It’s a once in a lifetime experience, and you will not regret it.
