Ms. Patty Toole Receives Staff Service Award

By Emma Coutinho, Shannon Evans

Ms. Patty Toole, who works in the cafeteria, was recently named the winner of the Staff Service Award. The award is based on nominations from the student body in addition to deliberation on behalf of the Unionville Post’s Editorial Board. The recipient is expected to demonstrate dedication to uplifting the high school community, supporting students both inside and outside the school environment, devote time to assisting school activities and events, display enthusiasm in student and community interests, and work to develop students into good citizens and leaders. Toole embodies all the necessary qualities by consistently creating an environment devoted to supporting students and making them feel valued.

Toole explained that winning the award is her greatest pride because “it makes [her] feel like [she has] done a great job, and [she] has done what [she] has set out to do.” Toole fosters meaningful connections with the students, making it a practice to ask about students' lives outside of school. Not only does Toole engage with students verbally, but she also supports them beyond the classroom, attending sporting events as well.

A food service worker of 18 years, Toole recognizes the importance of community. She notes that on particularly stressful or busy days “it's the kids that keep [her] motivated.” She offers powerful advice to students: “Keep your head up. Do your thing; don’t be a follower, be a leader.”
