On December 5, 2025, Netflix announced an agreement to acquire Warner Bros. Discoveryâs film and television studios, in addition to HBO and HBO Max. This $82.7 billion deal, which is aimed to finalize in the spring of 2026, constitutes a massive shift in the entertainment industry. Large media mergers and acquisitions of this nature threaten content diversity, promote monopolization in the entertainment industry, and prioritize profit over storytelling.
Firstly, consolidation allows Netflix to control the production of new media, reducing the variety of stories told by companies like Warner Bros. and HBO Max. This homogenization of content will most likely serve to suppress innovative content. Large and consolidated firms such as Netflix tend to âplay it safe,â or produce formulaic content in order to maximize profits.
Moreover, a more concentrated entertainment industry limits routes for smaller independent creators to take. A24 is an example of a popular independent film company, but its unusual success highlights how rare it is for independent studios to compete at a mainstream level. And, not only will Netflix be able to control which stories get told, but they will also be able to dictate how stories get told. Following this deal, Netflix will control the distribution of media and shape the future of mainstream entertainment culture. Netflixâs global streaming dominance directly undermines the existence of traditional cinemas, with more than 300 million being offered a lower-cost alternative to cinema outings.
Beyond its impact on theaters, this concentration of power can affect viewer experience. On December 31, I watched the âStranger Thingsâ finale. Like many, I was unsatisfied with the ending. Upon hearing of the Netflix merger, I questioned whether Netflix had the correct priorities. Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that the story I had grown up with wasnât as valuable as Netflixâs brand. So, come 2026, I made it one of my resolutions to support independent creators. As a society, we should follow suit and begin prioritizing authenticity over mass-produced content.
