Elf sitting on tabl

POV: A Christmas Dawn with the Elf on the Shelf

Author(s): Emily Field

I wake up with the bright shining sun, and I stretch my arms and legs before humans even call it dawn. Perched on my red-and-green shelf and quietly scheming, I can tell from the stillness that the little kids are still dreaming. With my festive heart filled with determination, I hop down from my fear-filled height to begin my nightly creation. From the toy cars to the stuffed bear, or the colored unicorn to the winged pair, I wreak havoc on the house. A fluffy plush right beneath the bright light, a rainbow llama near the photo of their mama, and a pink jellyfish just behind, I make the exact setup I have in mind. “Oh, what jolly enjoyment!” I cheer when I’m finished constructing beautiful pathways. Using the mini train, I lay out a winding lane across the soft ground. I pause to catch my breath and smile.

So with reassurance, I continue my task, thankful that it was only a feline creature behind the ambiguous image. Then, I tiptoe around to make sure each toy was in place. I check my list, check it twice, and make sure everything looks nice. The bear, the unicorn, the car, jellyfish, and llama–check! All that’s left is some eye-catching drama.

So, I climb up the twinkling tree, as I carefully balance on each branch. As I reach the top, my heart begins to hop. Holding the final surprise with poise so that it won’t drop, I know that a gold star will finish my terrific podium. After, I climb down slowly, and I realize that my job is almost complete.

The now joyous display is wonderfully neat, and I look with pride at the effort I put in. As an elf, I feel good; I am satisfied knowing that it was all done on my own. I pause for a moment, just soaking it in. The train tracks twist, the toys show a grin, the unicorn sparkles, the llama stands tall, and even the jellyfish seems to giggle and call. The cat once again passes by, wearing its Christmas cheer with great pride. Oh, what jolly enjoyment! I thought with a grin.

As the house remained still, wrapped in night’s glow, I feel the warm thrill of putting on a show. I walk back through the crowd, while everyone bows and tip my jingle bells to make a signaling sound. With the star secured and everything set in place, I rest back on my shelf, ready to hide out of sight. Soon, little footsteps would scamper and race, and I’d watch the joy light up each little face.

This is precisely what I wanted. The exciting surprise, and all else that is brought. I realize a little secret I want to share here: it’s not just the toys, the lights, or the tree, but the love that makes up all the magic we see. Every small act, every little careful touch, can make someone's day special so much. So, whether you’re tiny or big, near or far, remember: kindness and effort shine brighter than any star. “Oh, what jolly enjoyment!” I whisper once more, knowing that giving from the heart is what Christmas is for.
