Recognizing Women in STEM

International Day of Women and Girls in STEM, celebrated each year on February 11, emphasizes the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and math related fields. While It does this by also encouraging future generations of women to have futures in such fields. The day acts as a reminder of the importance of representation and opportunity in areas where women have been underrepresented. At the high school, the Girls Who Code Club is recognizing this day by promoting empowerment.

Girls Who Code is a club dedicated to closing the gender gap in technology by creating a supportive environment where students can try new forms of STEM related ideas, and computer sciences. Through learning activities and meetings, members work to inspire interest in STEM among young women. Senior Sophie Li explained the importance of the day, saying, “International Day of Women and Girls in Science is a marker of the advancements in gender equality and a celebration of how far women have come in STEM fields. It is a day to remember the struggles that women in the past have endured for our opportunities today. Closing the gender gap matters not only for equality, but also for the advancement of through a diverse community and new perspectives.”

Their perspective shows how recognition events like this can inspire students and build a safe space in STEM communities. Their experience reflects how the club gives opportunities for students to grow while fostering interest in technology. As Girls Who Code continues to have its influence, events like International Day of Women and Girls in STEM help highlight the club’s mission of encouraging inclusivity and innovation for young women. By celebrating and supporting aspiring students, the club hopes to inspire more young women to pursue futures in STEM related fields.
