Venezuela

Rethinking America’s Footprint

Author(s): Emily Field

Ever since Christopher Colombus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, imperialism has remained a constant source of controversy. To further complicate this issue, as a result of the progress of industrialization, advanced governmental structures, and improved technology, new forms of imperialism have emerged. Now, it is not only limited to the direct seizure of land, but includes control over another nation's politics, economy, commerce, and even technological development.

On January 3, 2026, the United States launched a “major military operation” in Venezuela. The event, however, was more similar to an invasion, capturing President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and removing them from their home. In the aftermath of the invasion, Venezuela was left in shock and suffered complete destabilization. On January 5, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez stepped in as the interim leader of Venezuela. These actions, orchestrated by American President Donald Trump, are compelling evidence of both political and economic imperialism by the United States in Venezuela. Simply put, Mr. Trump seized an opportunity to place blame on Mr. Maduro and gradually take over Venezuela.

Additionally, Mr. Trump has expressed great interest in the purchase of Greenland. He argues that purchasing Greenland will strengthen national security. Yet, even after Mr. Trump offered $700 billion to buy both Denmark and Greenland, the two countries have refused to concede. Ironically, even Greenland’s citizens can’t buy their own land. Additionally, there are concerns that Trump will launch a campaign to destroy all values of Inuit identity in order to exploit the land. To show support, Inuit organizations in Canada have traveled to Nuuk to show solidarity with Greenlanders.

Overall, the Trump Administration’s actions represent a complete disregard for the sovereignty of other nations. As the saying goes, “history repeats itself.” Thus, it is critically important to continue paying close attention to the administration’s actions during the remaining time Mr. Trump has left.
