Seniors LINK Community Together with 5K
By Ethan Childs
On May 9, three UHS seniors dedicated their senior graduation projects to a community fundraiser: the LINK 5k. Courtney Carlson, Justine Smith, and Brady Lasher, all prominent athletes of the Unionville cross country and track & field teams, decided to combine their love for running with the opportunity to host a race to sponsor future LINK activities. The LINK program has always been cherished by the Unionville students and staff, and the agenda of the organization is to encourage lasting bonds between learners and educators through “unplugged,” non-digital means. A staple of LINK is their annual camping trip, an event where select students and staff brave two days together outdoors. In an effort to preserve this tradition, the three athletes announced their “LINKing the Future 5k & 1 Mile Walk,” where all proceeds will be used to fund upcoming camping excursions for the next generation of Unionville students.
Needless to say, the 5k was a hit. Lasher says, “Over 120 people came out, which was way more than I expected. The event turned out to be a big success and I’m super happy to see everything work well.” Most notably, however, was the number of alumni who showed up to the run. From parents who attended Unionville to recent graduates the fundraiser proved that the Unionville community is stronger than ever and willing to support a worthy cause.
