Spreading Smiles Throughout Unionville
By Lasya Vijayapuram
As the holiday season approaches, people are eager to embrace the merriest time of the year. Here at the high school, students and clubs channeled that spirit by finding ways to give back to the community. Through thoughtful handmade cards and toy drives, the high school’s students brightened the days of many.
The Spread the Smile Club’s purpose was to share joy through compassion and creativity. Each holiday season, the club’s members strive to produce colorful cards and festive crafts that are distributed at numerous care facilities. These heartfelt gifts put smiles on the faces of many patients and residents, lifting the spirits of people and reminding them that they are cared for. Through their dedication and consideration, Spread the Smile shows how simple acts of kindness had a big impact during the holiday season.
Additionally, the Unionville Student Athletic Advisory Committee (USAAC) held its second annual toy drive. This event brought students together to contribute to a meaningful cause–bringing joy to children in need. The drive began on November 10, and students could drop off new, unwrapped gifts in the gym lobby or at sporting events. Each gift was donated directly to local families in need, ensuring that children in the community had a joyful, holiday season. By organizing this drive, the USAAC encouraged teamwork within the school to help spread happiness throughout the community.
One of the student leaders, senior Allie D’Angelo, said, “Our purpose is to spread joy and kindness to those who do not get out much. It is super important that everyone feels joyfulness and warmth around the holidays. We always send hundreds of cards for Thanksgiving and Christmas and we are always looking for more! The holiday season can be crazy but it is important to spread holiday spirit to those that need it.” Together, Spread the Smile and USAAC showed how the high school students brought holiday cheer to the lives of many. Whether it was through crafting meaningful cards or donating toys, these efforts reminded the school community the importance of giving back. Both clubs inspired others to get involved and reminded the high school what the holiday season was truly about: spreading joy, cheer, and kindness throughout the community.
