Teenagers Contemplate Upcoming Halloween Plans

Author(s): Scout Shipley

As October rolls by and autumn approaches, a question floats through the minds of students: “What are our plans for Halloween?” For teenagers these days, the dilemma as to what their plans should be can become quite difficult. Lots of people start to feel nostalgic for how this holiday used to be: back when every trick was extraordinary and each mystical decoration enchanted the eye. However, that magical atmosphere fades away for teenagers. So, do we stick with old traditions and try to get back this whimsical night? Or do we create new traditions?

Taking a nostalgic route, there's nothing wrong with trick-or-treating. There are lots of contrasting ideas about it, as many believe that once you hit the age of 13, you are too old to go around asking for candy. However, you’re only young for so long. It's free candy, so why not take advantage of it? One may argue that you could just buy candy, but it doesn't hold that same magical feeling as trick-or-treating does.

A whole nostalgic world is created when you are walking on the street in your costume as the sky darkens. Leaves dance in the wind and the echoing sound of laughter builds, while the whole world is painted orange, purple, and black.

Next to trick-or-treating stands the Halloween party. Many opt for this option, as it contains food, friends, scary movies, and more.

Sophomore Jeffrey Lux, for example, will be spending his Halloween “hanging out with [his] buds” and watching movies. A few fun watches include Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13. These movies bring a spooky feel that's perfect for Halloween.

On the other hand, some prefer to just go along with what their friends are doing to have a good time. Junior Karolina Simonik stated that she's going to attend a party at one of her friends' houses: “I’m doing this [because] all my friends are doing it so I’m bandwagoning with them.”

So, although it brings some debate for what to do, Halloween when you are a teenager is a fun experience that brings back memories of childhood. From nostalgic trick-or-treating to scary horror movies, there’s a plethora of spooky activities for everyone. No matter how you choose to spend your Halloween, the holiday is a unique chance to embrace the spirit of the season.
