Traveling is truly a unique experience, especially for those at a young age who know little about the world and seek to explore it. It has numerous benefits, such as expanding knowledge on different cultures and traditions, and it encourages people out of their comfort zone, allowing for a variety of different perspectives. The high school's International Club not only offers new experiences and unforgettable memories, but it also gives students the most wonderful trips alongside their friends!
Through the International Club, students have the opportunity to experience the world beyond Unionville walls. According to Keeley Lannon, English teacher and club advisor, the school international club advisor, "Navigating the challenges and joys of travel is a lot like being in a classroom; the answers aren't always right in front of you and the solution is not always easy, but with dedication, flexibility, and an open mind, good things will happen and with that comes growth and renewed self-awareness." Experiencing new environments brings teaching to life; it develops independence and exposes students to diverse experiences.
Travel is about surprising people with lessons they never expected and that is part of what makes it so valuable. Even though unfamiliar environments bring new memories and teach them historical narratives about different countries, navigating them can also mean learning about other essential skills. As Lannon mentioned, "It's one thing to go on trips with your family, but it's another thing entirely to step outside your comfort zone on your own to develop a truer sense of self." Some skills develop outside of school, and in the International Club, students learn the real meaning of independence, adaptability and self-reliance, all of which are necessary for growth and success beyond high school.
Additionally, experiencing new cultures can leave a drastic impact, providing various sights and creativity. "Travel does something to your heart, and once it hits that space, there's no turning back", said Lannon, after she went on her first trip with her high school-an experience she says sparked such inspiration on herself that it made her want to be a part of this club. Many students return from trips with new ideas or a deeper passion awakened in them after experiencing the so-called "culture shock."
In short, traveling and learning about the world leads to students' growth as both learners and citizens. The International Club shows that education can take place anywhere as long as students keep an open mind and a willingness to learn.
