Unionville Crushes 4x800 School Record

By Dhilan Chopra

The track team’s successful season reached a new high at the Unionville Invitational just a few weeks ago on April 26. Seniors Robbie Elson and Brady Lasher, and Juniors William Turner and Nan Stone broke the school’s record for the 4 x 800 with a time of 7:52.14. Though the time itself was impressive, the record didn’t just earn a plaque or signify a higher ranking, but rather, nodded to the dedication these four have contributed to the program.

At the forefront, Lasher has proved to be an amazing competitor since he burst onto the scene freshman year. It was never about the record for him and his teammates; it was about having the heart to win at their event because that is what they had set out to do. He commented that the team had been through a lot. Lasher says, “We had a rough winter, with injuries and sickness, but we put that behind us in the spring and far out exceeded any expectations we had going in,” a message that captures the hardship this team has had to endure, but also the immense improvement this team overcame despite the circumstances.

But it doesn’t just stop there. The team’s results came as a surprise to the very members of the winning relay as well. Lasher, again, commented, “I thought we could maybe squeeze out a 7:55, so when I saw Robbie cross in at 7:52, I was absolutely stunned.” The boys certainly had a special day here at the high school, from that feeling of being “absolutely stunned” to just being ecstatic about just how much their hard work paid off. One thing is certain, though: this group of young men certainly deserved it.

Lasher says, “The boys have really raised the bar for greatness in the 800. When I was a sophomore, 2:03 used to be great, but now anything not sub 2 is disappointing.” As these four talented young men begin to finish their season, with two headed off to college, it is certain to be a day that they will never forget. For this 4x800 team, the track team, and even the high school itself, it is truly a moment of greatness.
