In 2026, Valentine's Day on February 14 happens to occur on a Saturday. Beginning in the Middle Ages, the holiday is named after Saint Valentine, who sent a letter to his love titled "Your Valentine” before he was executed. Afterwards, a pope dedicated “Valentine’s Day” to love to replace a similar festival that had celebrated the Roman god of agriculture, Faunus. Additionally, British author Geoffrey Chaucer linked the season to birds mating, and the joyous holiday’s popularity took off.
Today’s world continues linking Valentine’s Day to love. For example, couples tend to spend the day with each other, and some may even ask out the one they fancy. Social media advertises such messages and partnership. A majority of stores tend to display their love-themed items about a month in advance. These would be roses, chocolate in heart-shaped boxes, grams, and so on. Additionally, certain organizations and clubs put up fundraisers.
Recently, a new club has sprung up at the high school. DECA has organized a fundraiser at the elevator lobby on the first floor beginning Friday, February 6 at both Learns, and continued the next week on Monday and Tuesday. The club also sold candy grams and roses all three days. On Friday, February 13, the roses and grams were delivered to their recipients during the entirety of Lunch and Learn. It may be a well-known and simple idea, but these presents can be given to anyone and devoid of romantic gestures.
Similarly, the Food Club, a club native to our school, hosted a bake sale as well. The sale was held during Lunch and Learn from Wednesday through Friday, February 11 through 13. Valentine-themed cookies were sold by the Food Club’s members in the elevator lobby. These delectable sweets were made by the students; in exchange, many students stopped by to admire the hard work of their peers!
