Pocopson Elementary School, like the other elementary schools in the district, is known for its grade-level activities, including the third-grade Read-a-Thon, the fourth-grade skating party, and the fifth-grade Oldies Dance. These are events that the kids look forward to as they advance to each grade level. A newer event gaining popularity is the Someone Special Social, directed toward Pocopson’s second graders. This year, 75 out of the 80 grade’s students registered to attend.

“This event has been going on for three years,” said Desiree Zanghi, a lead organizer. “It’s been a great bonding experience for the second graders.” Students are invited to bring anyone important in their lives as their “someone special,” whether it be a parent, grandparent, guardian, sibling, or friend.

The evening featured a variety of activities. “We have cotton candy, pretzels, a photo booth, interactive dances, and a new craft table this year where they make Valentine’s Day cards or key chains,” Zanghi said. The goal of the event is to give students the chance to have fun together outside the classroom. “[The kids] have a great time. They come in, they’re smiling, [and they get to] bring their ‘someone special’ with them,” said Zanghi.

Second-grade teacher Debbie Crosson says, “Most of my class is here, and I’m assuming it’s probably the same way for the other classes, too. It’s been a great event to bring that special person.”
