Sliding Out of Summer and Falling for Fall

By Aditi Kurien

Green succumbs to vibrant hues of fire as autumn creeps closer. Your breath is visible to the eye as you talk in the crisp air.

Come September, the rapid shift from sandals and tank tops is replaced by stylish jeans and boots. Apples lay ripe on trees, pumpkins ready to pick from the vines, and spider webs and spooky decor fill homes.

Suddenly, that go-to iced mango refresher from Starbucks is immediately switched to a steaming hot pumpkin spice latte. After months of heavy, hot air constantly sticking to the skin, a relief of cool autumn air blows past. Cable knit sweaters and soft sweatpants make their way down from the top shelf of your closet and fill hangers that, not so long ago, were packed to the brim and held tank tops and shorts.

Long days in the sun turn to evenings curled in the corner of the couch. The TV is aglow with football games, and the bleachers beside the field at school are once again filled with cheering students.

But as school returns to its full vivaciousness once again, the bleachers aren’t the only part that has filled up again. Students make their way through the hallways and push their way through crowded staircases, and homework piles up on desks and kitchen tables, like every year.

And just like that, hot summers burn away, leaving the brisk and biting autumn air, and fallen leaves that invite sounds of crunching under your shoes. You whisper to yourself: Farewell, summer, welcome, fall.
