The Craze of the Cartoon Lunchboxes: “That’s So Senior!”
By Zoe Seok
To my left there’s a Scooby-Doo, and to my right there’s Peppa Pig. Before I can even turn in any direction, I am outnumbered by almost adult-age students who are repping childish figures all over their school supplies. Despite the overwhelming mob of such senior silliness, there is something slightly funny about seeing fully grown high school students walking through the hallways and carrying lunch bags marked with beloved cartoon characters from the past. At their transformative “growing up” stage in life, the so-called “role models of our school” are making it a fashion statement to show off their lunches with a tad bit of wacky flair. If you couldn’t tell by the crowds of bags and boxes that look like they could belong to first graders, the seniors have decided to go out with a statement for their last year. But honestly, there is nothing wrong with it. If anything, it’s very refreshing to see.
As we all know, high school can get serious at times. Between tests, college applications, sports, volunteering, and homework, the stress runs high. Having something small and silly with a nostalgic TV character or game added on makes everyone’s day just a little better.
In reality, bits and pieces like a goofy lunch bag can distract from the never-ending school monotony. I know I’m not the only one who giggles at the miniscule Barbie or Mickey Mouse lunchboxes while passing by.
I mean, really: who wouldn’t want to prance around the school in toddler fashion if given the opportunity?
There is also something inspiring in the seniors’ comfortability. One could wonder if the past four years have made them resistant to embarrassment. They are not worried about if they are fitting the trend or if others are following them, but rather they are creating new fads! After spending years worrying about both trivial and substantial things, maybe seniors believe the last year of high school is just the perfect time to spice up their everyday life with a little bit of a blast from the past. Whether it’s Scooby-Doo, Peppa Pig, Disney princesses, or Minecraft, if it brings any joy into your life, why not carry it? You can’t knock it until you try it!
