Swinging in to Golf Season

Unionville Golf Media Day

The UHS Boys Golf team has had an impressive season so far, leading with an 8-0 record, taking down tough opponents such as Great Valley, Rustin, and Kennett. The team is soon approaching Chesmonts and possibly Districts.

They are led by their experienced coach: Coach James O’Rourke, a teacher at UCFSD who has been playing golf for over twenty years and coaching the high school boys team for around ten years. He describes his team as “a pretty tight group.” He emphasizes that “the camaraderie is great, and there is a brotherhood feel on the team.” Further, he says that “we can get a bit on the silly side here and there… but overall I like where we are.”

There are currently nine members on the Varsity Boys Team: Matt McGinnity (Senior), Harris Stanislawczyk (Junior), Dhilan Chopra (Junior), Lucas Shank (Junior), Eli Dukart (Junior), Tyler Panaro (Freshman), Beckett Lim (Senior), Phillip Paoletti (Junior), and Matt McCarthy (Junior). As they advance towards Chesmonts, the UHS Boys Golf team continues to dominate the season without a loss.

O’Rourke says their streak is “a credit to how deep [they] are as a team and how players are taking it on their own to step up and be “the guy” [needed] each time.” Even though the team has lost some of its most notable members, the team dynamic has still stayed stronger than ever. Coach O’Rourke says that something he always says to his players is “It doesn’t matter how good you are at golf. What matters is how good you are on the day you have to be good.”

However, even with all the titles and championships, O’Rourke believes that “the most rewarding part has easily been the relationships that [he] has developed throughout the years with [his] players and coach.”

Let’s cheer on the UHS Boys Golf Team as they head on to Chesmonts and hopefully Districts!
